Non-Examined Assessments

Part of your qualification's structure

exam

What is NON-EXAMINED ASSESSMENT (NEA)?

Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) what it ‘says on the tin’. It is part of your qualification’s structure that does not require an end point examination. This could include Science Practicals, Geography Field Trips, Environmental Science Fieldwork, Historical Enquiries, an English or Foreign Language Speaking Test, English Coursework, Astronomy Observations and Art Practicals  to list the most common examples.

Tutors & Exams cater for the vast majority of NEA subjects and specialise in those detailed above. We are open to discussing additional options, not listed, with your tutors or teaching groups to help widen participation even further!

What subjects can you apply for?

Science

Tutors & Exams are uniquely placed to offer a wide range of Science Practical Endorsement (CPAC) sessions at King Henry VIII School in Coventry, Harrow School in Middlesex, South Bank UTC in London, Bolton School in Bolton, and King’s College in Taunton. Your A Level Science exams can then be taken at any of our exam centres. If you intend to sit your exams at a non Tutors & Exams centre but they cannot offer CPAC provision it’s not a problem. There’s no requirement for any prior arrangements, just let your exam centre know you’re sitting practicals with Tutors & Exams.  Once you have completed your CPAC we’ll send over all relevant documentation to your exam centre for endorsement purposes.

We can now accept GCSE Science applications for Biology, Chemistry, Combined Science and Physics, as long as a candidate is working with a DLP and completes a practical statement via their DLP. The carry forward rule is still in place as well.

Therefore, we recommend candidates sit International GCSE Sciences with either Pearson Edexcel, or Cambridge  International Education where an additional exam paper can be taken as an alternative to the practical.

Geography

Your dedicated Private Candidate Assessment Centre has developed a programme for candidates studying with a Distance Learning Provider, or independently, to attend the required four-day Fieldwork trip.

You will work with an experienced Geography tutor on ‘coastal study’  Fieldwork based in Skegness, Lincolnshire. It will include the marking element of the Investigation.

Transport will be provided over the four day period for all fieldwork activities.  Risk assessments and equipment will also be provided to ensure your safety and that you have all the necessary tools to complete your assessments.

GCSE Geography also has a Fieldwork requirement. Therefore, we  recommend taking International GCSE Geography with either Pearson Edexcel, or Cambridge International Education where an additional exam paper can be taken as an alternative to the Fieldtrip.

History

You can work with a number of Distance Learning Providers (DLPs’) to ensure that your A Level Historical Enquiry is appropriate, authenticated and marked. A list of Tutors & Exams partner DLP’s is available to view here.

However, if you are not working with a Tutors & Exams DLP partner, you will need to work with one of our approved tutors.  Additional costs will apply and you will be required to work with the tutor for a minimum of 10 hours tuition to enable them to authenticate your work accurately.

Please contact the NEA Team at Tutor & Exams for the latest list of approved tutors

Environmental Science

Your dedicated Private Candidate Assessment Centre has developed a programme for candidates studying independently to take up the required four-day Fieldwork trip.

You will work with an experienced Environmental Science tutor throughout your Fieldtrip, based in Lincolnshire. Transport will be provided from a location in Lincolnshire to all fieldwork activities and includes the marking element of the Investigation. Risk assessments and equipment will also be provided to ensure your safety and that you have all the necessary tools to complete your assessments.

iGCSE Environmental Management (no fieldwork required) is available through Cambridge International Education.

A Level English

A Level English Language, Literature and Language & Literature have an NEA element that needs to be authenticated and marked by an approved Exam Centre in order for you to receive a grade.

Tutors & Exams provided the solution to NEA delivery that has been adopted by many DLP’s offering A Level English qualifications. We work closely with partner DLP’s to authenticate and mark required NEA.

However, if you are not working with a Tutors & Exams DLP partner, you will need to work with one of our approved tutors.  Additional costs will apply and you will be required to work with the tutor for a minimum of 10 hours tuition to enable them to authenticate your work accurately.

Please contact the NEA Team at Tutor & Exams for the latest list of approved tutors.

GCSE English

For many private candidates the Speaking, Listening and Communication (SLC) component of GCSE English has proved problematic. However, you can now access all GCSE English assessment with ease. We will arrange a SLC session with you, during the assessment window(s), enabling you to achieve the endorsement on your certificate.

Alternatively you can opt to take an International GCSE with Pearson Edexcel or Cambridge International Education if you wish to progress without the SLC component.  We would strongly advise that you always check with any prospective Further or Higher Education establishment or Employer as to their qualification requirements.

Food Preparation & Nutrition

In advance of the 2023/24 academic year, we are delighted to announce GCSE Food and Nutrition will be available to candidates entering for OCR Specification J309 only. As many of you will be aware this has, historically, been a difficult subject to access for those outside of mainstream education. Indeed you may be at a school where GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition is not part of the curriculum so you might wish to consider doing it as an extra-curricular activity outside of school time.

To enable you to access this qualification we have partnered up with two culinary practioners; The Farm Cookery School, based in Wiltshire and Worship Worth Experiences near Sutton Coldfield. Both offer students the chance to complete a GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition within one year. Please click on either partner for further details regarding course content, fees and what to expect. Please note we will only be able examine candidates who are receiving GCSE tutorials from one of these partners.
